This is the book I wish I had when I started my consulting engineering practice. Although that is the primary focus, there are dozens of lessons and practical advice for any entrepreneur in construction or design.

I just read your book. I LOVE IT. It was filled with amazing guiding light; it moved quickly. You captured HUGE issues and reduced them to simple lessons. I believe ALL FOLKS, both new in business or tenured, would benefit from this (book). As one who is a 'bit seasoned,' I found it to be heart warming in a way that I felt in good company with you as I traveled my own journey and especially appreciate your reminders of personal protocol, kindness, fairness, and humility heart warming. I found myself smiling and bending the corners of the pages with 'quotes' and 'statements' that served as your guiding lights and takeaways.
I purchased this book because I’ve known the author for decades to be a quintessential professional engineer and national leader in timber engineering. The book addresses 30 practice topics with a detailed example of issues he faced and what he learned from the experiences. After each topic, he has a couple sentences on Lesson learned. Having reviewed the topics and lessons learned, just one “lesson” could be worth 1,000 times the cost of the book.

Starting a consulting business 101, with lessons you don't have to learn the hard way. Ideas for a successful engineering business that should be kept in mind no matter how experienced you are, or handed off to newbies. And served in small doses.
Worth rereading every once in a while, too.
Hourdequin condenses the learned wisdom of running his own private practice into a tight, easy reading book that’s focused on what you need to be successful in your own business.
Ideas and stories are woven into larger life lessons that are helpful in managing your personal world as well as your company world. Without knowing how to navigate the seams between the two, life can be overwhelming.
Full of great tips and insight distilled from years of practice, this is a go-to book for all those running a business and juggling the personal and professional intersections. As Hourdequin says in his description, “Applying the dozens of lessons and practical advice will save you the time, energy, and cost of learning them the way I did.”
Essays range from those about a young lad on his first fishing and hunting forays to dates gone awry, interesting travel partners, and an opinion piece about relationships.
